Secretaries' Cup38 Years of Coast Guard vs. Merchant Marine
Secretaries' Cup
The start of the Fall sports season is now marked each year by the Secretaries' Cup when the U.S. Coast Guard Academy faces off against its rivals from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (King's Point) in a series of football games which date back to 1949. USCGA won the first go-round then with a score of 21-14, however, it was seventeen years before USMMA had the chance to retaliate, which they did, 47-6. Another eight years passed before the third game in 1974, but since then, these rivals have played every year but one for a grand total of 38 meetings with USMMA leading 27-11. Will USCGA come back in 2010? We think so!
The Superintendent’s Trophy In 2003, the schools jointly established the Superintendent’s Trophy, adding to the tradition. This contest also pits USCGA against USMMA but for the entire academic year. One point is awarded to the winning school after each match, giving all sports equal weight. The school with the highest score is presented with the Superintendent's Trophy in a halftime ceremony at the Secretaries' Cup, with the winning school keeping possession of the trophy until the next year.
While this annual event continues to feature the Academy’s respective football teams, now other sports also join in the day’s marked excitement:
