Lieutenant Derek Petty, a native of Colorado, graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management.

His first assignment was to USCGC Stratton (WMSL 752) in Alameda, California where he served as a Deck Watch Officer, Boarding Officer, Communications Officer, and Weapons Officer, aboard. On Stratton, he patrolled the Bearing Sea, Gulf of Alaska and Southern Pacific Ocean conducting counter-drug operations, Operation Artic Shield, and search and rescue, in one of the Coast Guard’s most dynamic regions.  

In June 2015, he reported to USCGC Wahoo (WPB 87345) out of Port Angeles, Washington as Commanding Officer. While serving on Wahoo, he completed over 250 recreational and fisheries boardings, conducted search and rescue and counter-drug along the U.S./Canada border.  

In June 2017, he reported to the Coast Guard Academy Professional Maritime Studies branch where she currently serves as a Nautical Science II instructor.  

His awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Achievement Medal with operational distinguishing devices, and various other unit awards.
