We shoved off from Rockland, Maine yesterday. A huge crowd gathered to see us off, and again I felt the joy of their respect and the burden of my future responsibility to them. We hoisted the sails for our first time last night and the task proved difficult due to our inexperience. Eventually, we completed the evolution, and it was very satisfying to look up and see the fruits of our labor.
I had morning scullery duty today, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Miller donated some speakers so we were able to listen to music while we washed dishes.
Life at sea can be difficult. Walking requires great thought, as we don’t have “sea legs” yet. We stumble quite often, and I personally find stairs terrifying. Some have gotten seasick. Fortunately, however, there are pills and patches to treat the symptoms. All these challenges have only increased my respect for expert seamen, who sail regardless of wind and storm, who elevate seamanship to an art form.
Now, I’m off to quarters!
