Tall Ship Eagle3/c Jonathan Kelly
My Eagle experience has been better than I originally thought it would be. I was extremely nervous about coming to Eagle this summer because of the some of the ‘sea stories’ I’ve heard from other cadets. I have come to enjoy my time aboard, primarily due to the great people I have been able to meet. As a 4/c it’s hard to meet and get to know your other classmates when you’re so busy squaring your corners. While aboard Eagle, I have become really close with a lot of my classmates. The cramped living quarters and long hours on watch help erase differences and we find out how many things we have in common.
I have also learned a lot about navigation and standing a proper watch. There is a great amount of responsibility given to the helmsman and look-out. Not only do you actually steer the vessel through the ocean, but you have to be aware of your surroundings at all times. You ARE the eyes and ears of the ship. Also, I have realized how much work the food-service staff puts into their job. People don’t really stop and think about how much work it takes to prepare three meals a day for everyone onboard AND clean up after them.
Well…I still have a little under three weeks until my summer cruise ends, so I can only hope it continues to get better.
