Tall Ship Eagle
3/c Charles Cassiano

Another 4th of July spent in the Coast Guard. Last year, I was standing on the parade field at the Academy, staring at the National Ensign while a cadre told me to think about all the sacrifices others have made for me. This year I am on the Cutter Eagle for Independence Day. Reflecting on my voyage, I can clearly see the ups and downs and am proud to celebrate all that I have overcome. Most of my best friends at the Coast Guard Academy were on the first phase of the Eagle’s voyage, which has meant I’ve had to make new friends with my current shipmates and has been a good experience.

While in Charleston, South Carolina, I was able to spend some time with my family. It was an unreal experience. It was the first time my family got to actually see what I do, so that was great. Well, time to celebrate another Independence Day in the Coast Guard – this time at sea, with my shipmates aboard the Eagle.
