Commander McGurer joined the Permanent Commissioned Teaching Staff at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2003. Her previous assignments include Operations Officer aboard the USCGC Blackhaw, graduate school, USCG Academy rotating military faculty, Senior Intelligence Watch Officer at the Joint Interagency Task Force East, and Total Ownership Cost Manager of a multi-billion dollar acquisition program.
