2/c cadet Dave Nielsen, of Middletown, Connecticut, learns how to be a navigation evaluator with the help of Petty Officer 2nd Class Katie Flynn, Burlington, Vermont, and briefs the bridge every three minutes about changing navigation conditions while the crew transits out of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Monday, August 10, 2009. Portsmouth was the last port call before homeport for the crew who has been underway since mid April.

Voyage Update
17 May 2010
Winds: Easterly at 20 knots
Seas: 8 - 10 feet
Eagle is making 10 knots on a broad reach, thoroughly into the trade wind belt.
The crew, upperclass cadets, and class of 2013 are enjoying some great sailing conditions, despite the occasional 30 degree roll which tends to dislodge drinking cups and food at inopportune moments. The cadets have become proficient at "wearing ship," or turning Eagle's stern through the wind (referred to as "jibing" on a smaller sailboat). Each day, Eagle works her way closer to Cartagena by sailing alternately northwest and southwest, knocking nearly 250 miles off each day. While sailing the direct route would be faster, working the ship gives the crew and cadets a chance to work together and learn the ship's intricacies. On Wednesday, Eagle will rendezvous with several other Class A tall ships for the Cartagena, Colombia portion of the Vela Sudamerica 2010 regatta, which should be a great time for all involved.

Do you have what it takes?
Incoming cadets spend one memorable week of the summer aboard Eagle. Then, after the completion of their first year at the Academy, they are aboard for three weeks of Eagle's international voyage.
Consider the possibilities and your future aboard this one-of-a-kind vessel.  Apply today!
