ABOUT DAKOTA

My name’s Dakota Richter, and I’m proud to say that I’m a member of the Class of 2018. I grew up in the midst of the tri-state area – that is, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana – but call Kentucky home. That being said, I love New England thus far, but am holding out hope for a mild first winter.

Personally, I decided to make the Coast Guard Academy my goal in the eighth grade after a few weeks of online research and a handful of conversations with veterans in my community. Since the young age of eleven, I had been a member of the Young Marines – a nation-wide youth leadership program that I cherished being a member of from 2007 until this past June, when I graduated high school and exceeded the age limit. The program helped to shape not only my goals but my character, and I truly believe it’s what led me to set and keep my sights on the Coast Guard Academy. (Needless to say, the program took up most all of my time in high school – but I don’t regret a minute of it.)

Now that I’m here, I plan on being a Government major with an emphasis on Homeland Security. I’m one of the newest members of the Combat Arms Team (yes, the Kentucky stereotype is thriving), and in turn will be representing Golf Company as an IC Warrior. On a personal note, my goals for here and beyond include learning two additional languages (we’ll see about that) and continuing to travel while a cadet at the Academy.
