ABOUT IRENE

Hey everyone! I am Irene Martorell Crespo, a first class cadet from Honduras. In case you didn’t know, Honduras is located in Central America. Its capital is Tegucigalpa and its official language is Spanish. It is famous because of the beautiful beaches it has and its big mountains. Now, I will tell you a little bit about myself. I was born in La Ceiba and have a huge family! My mom, my dad, my brother who graduated from West Point and now serves in the Honduran Special Forces, my oldest sister who is a first class at West Point, me, and my youngest sister, who is a cadet here at the Academy as well. Before coming to the Coast Guard Academy, my plan was to go to a military academy. After taking a look at the Coast Guard's campus and its small community, I fell in love. I knew that it was going to be perfect for me. Being at sea, saving people’s lives, and taking risks is my thing.

Swab Summer was a challenge for me but not impossible. There were hard times but there were also times when we could have fun with our shipmates and laugh. Basically, Swab Summer is a training period to make everyone stronger both physically and emotionally. Not only were we trained, but we got to meet other people from different places and compete against other companies. Learning indoc from the Running Light was an important yet difficult task. Just concentrate and it will be easy. Overall, Swab Summer was a nice experience and something unforgettable. I learned a lot from it and make new friends.
