Growing up, I spent summers at my grandparents’ lake house, where I developed a love for the water and adventure. When I learned about the Coast Guard Academy in high school, I immediately knew that I wanted to be a member of this service. I was especially drawn to the humanitarian mission of Coast Guard and its many opportunities.

I graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2015 with a B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, as well as a national championship boxing title! My time at the Academy was unforgettable, and the cadet summer experiences were particularly amazing. I spent third class summer at Station Boston and the other half on the USCGC Eagle, our tall ship. During my second class summer I trained cadet candidates preparing to go to prep school, and the next year, I was aboard Eagle again, then a commercial container ship out of Tacoma, Washington. These were all invaluable experiences that could not have been found at any other institution.

I served my first tour as a student engineer aboard USCGC Mackinaw, a Great Lakes ice breaker in Michigan. I was also in charge of the damage control division, ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of all damage control equipment. I was also given the responsibility of leading damage control efforts in event of a fire or flood. This experience was invaluable as I was able to gain experience as an engineer as well as a leader.

Overall, the Coast Guard offered me numerous opportunities for growth and learning, and allowed me to contribute to the service’s humanitarian mission. As for my future career, I hope to continue helping people in any way I can.
