Upon graduating from United States Merchant Marine Academy, I entered the U.S. Coast Guard, and have not looked back! I chose to commission into the Coast Guard over other military branches because I felt inclined to improve the safety conditions of the marine industry, for the environment as well as mariners.

My specialty is prevention ashore, with two sub-specialties: inspections and water ways operations and management (WWM). As a Prevention Officer, I help prevent marine casualties or mishaps that could affect people, property, and the environment. My specialty helps mariners operate in accordance with federal regulations making a dangerous job – shipping – as safe as possible.

As the Waterways Management Division Chief at Sector Delaware Bay, I was a direct representative of the Captain of the Port, which is a federally designated title with significant regulatory authority. We managed Coast Guard aids to navigation teams, helped manage bridges, and handled marine event applications. We also facilitated navigation safety and maritime commerce during emergencies, planned construction, and high-visibility events. In Delaware Bay, I had the opportunity to participate in the Delaware River channel deepening project, which aimed to facilitate safer navigation. I was fortunate enough to work directly with the Delaware Bay and River Pilots Association, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the port authorities during the project. Working on a major project – one that will have a huge positive impact on navigation safety and maritime commerce within the Port of Wilmington, Philadelphia, and New Jersey – was very rewarding!

Being in an important leadership position at such a young age has been an amazing opportunity. I am fortunate to have been able to positively impact my community and my country. I hope to share this and a lot more with you as you consider the opportunities of the Coast Guard Academy. Go Bears!
