Lieutenant Commander Young received his commission from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 2002 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. During his first assignment, LCDR Young served as both a shipboard engineer and a diver aboard CGC Polar Star, conducting deployments to the Arctic and Antarctic. After graduating from Navy Flight School in 2006, LCDR Young reported to Air Station San Francisco, California. There he earned pilot qualifications as an Aircraft Commander, an Airborne Use of Force (AUF) Mission Commander, and an Air Intercept Pilot, and completed the Aviation Engineering Training program to receive his "red rag" as a Coast Guard Aeronautical Engineer. In 2010, LCDR Young was transferred to Air Station Traverse City, Michigan, where he served as the unit's Assistant Engineering Officer and as an H-65 Instructor Pilot and Flight Examiner. During this tour, LCDR Young attained civilian pilot ratings as a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and an Airline Transport Pilot (ATP), completed an M.S. degree in Environmental Policy and Management, and earned his LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credential.In 2013, LCDR Young was selected for the Coast Guard Academy Instructor Program (Physics) and attended the University of California Santa Cruz, where he earned an M.S. in Earth Sciences and conducted research in hydrologic runoff dynamics.

LCDR Young enjoys spending time with his family, is an ardent student of geology and Earth Sciences, and is an avid bicyclist, runner, backpacker, and Ultimate Frisbee player.
